Bhopal: “Righteousness exalts a nation; but sin is a reproach to any people.” On the eve of Easter festival, a Christian organisation working for the welfare of the religiously persecuted people in India has urged the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi to release all those who are imprisoned under false cases of religious conversion or arrested under the Religious Freedom Act for their faith in Jesus Christ.

In an open letter to the Prime Minister of India, founder president of Persecution Relief, Shibu Thomas, has requested him to release all the Christian believers who are implicated in false cases of religious conversion and imprisoned in various jails in India immediately. He said hundreds of Christians across the country are languishing in Indian jails under the Religious Freedom Act simply because of their faith in Jesus Christ.

Citing the US Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) notification, Thomas said, the US commission has called on governments across the world to release all prisoners held because of their religion. The notification states “Amid efforts to contain the COVID-19 pandemic, the US Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) calls on governments to release all prisoners held because of their religion or belief around the world,” he said

“Globally, an untold number of victims are held behind bars unjustly for exercising their freedom of religion or belief,” USCIRF Chair Tony Perkins stated in the notification. “We call on governments to release all prisoners wrongly detained and, in the meantime, provide adequate health conditions and safety for those who must remain behind bars.”

In view of the grave situation in India because of the Covid19 pandemic, Thomas urged the Prime Minister to take immediate action to release the Christian prisoners. He said the Lord Jesus Christ will grant him wisdom & knowledge in abundance at a time when the whole nation is going through a tough situation. He said, as always, the Church stands with him in prayer and also to fulfil the social responsibilities towards the country.

He also thanked PM Modi for his wonderful tweets on Good Friday to the nation saying “Lord Christ devoted his life to serving others. His courage and righteousness stand out and so does his sense of justice. On Good Friday, we remember Lord Christ and his commitment to truth, service and justice.”

Thomas said, one cannot have true liberty without true righteousness, men and women living responsibly under God as citizens of both His Kingdom and this great country. Righteousness and liberty are inextricably interwoven, he added.
