Bhopal: Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MPNREGA) has proved to be a boon for the workforce of Madhya Pradesh in this time of unemployment and the unprecedented attack of the coronavirus.
According to an official statement, the Madhya Pradesh government under the leadership of Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has started employment oriented activities of MNREGA in the state, except the virus infected areas, from April 20.
As per the official statement, the state Panchayat and Rural Development Department has started 1,25,061 works in 22,070 gram panchayats. A total of 11,25,893 workers are getting employment every day and this chain will continue, the official website claims.
23,000 women engaged in mask production
Moreover, statement claimed that women are getting employment at home, due to the process of manufacturing home-made masks in urban and rural areas of the state.
Madhya Pradesh Rural Livelihoods Mission has been playing a significant role in providing employment in rural areas. The unique experiment of engaging women of self-help groups in activities like making of home-made masks, sanitizers, PPE kits, hand soap was done in the state.
More than 7 lakh masks, 58 thousand litres of sanitizer, 9 thousand litres hand wash and about 1.5 lakh soaps have been produced by 13,000 women members of about 5,000 self-help groups in the state.
Similarly, women have also been linked with the task of making masks in urban areas through the “Jeevan-Shakti” scheme. Under the scheme, more than 10 thousand women have started production by registering online. These products have been made available in the market by the state government.
The goods produced by these groups are being provided to the workers engaged in the war against Corona, including police personnel, medical staff and MNREGA workers.
Women self-help groups
In a new experiment, women self-help groups have been connected in wheat procurement work which was started on April 15, in 5 districts giving them new employment opportunities.
Along with the organised efforts launched in the state, facilities like supply of essential goods through home delivery to common people in urban areas have also helped in providing employment to the needy. The procurement of wheat started in the state from April 15 has also become a major source of employment. About two lakh people are directly or indirectly connected with employment activities.
The state government has also decided to provide employment by starting economic activities in the state soon. Tendu Patta collection and construction activities are also being started soon in forest areas.
