Kottayam: A Catholic priest was found dead in a well Monday in Ayarkkunnam of Kottayam district in Kerala, the God’s own country.

As reported in thenewsminute.com, Father George Ettuparayil, 55, the parish priest at Punnathura St Joseph's Church, was found dead in a well on the church premises at around 8.30 am on Monday. He was missing since Sunday. He had taken over charge as vicar of the church a year ago.

The police found the CCTV cameras in the compound switched off.

According to sources, Fr. George wanted a transfer from the parish and he also sought an appointment with the Bishop concerned. He was to meet the Bishop on Sunday.

Some sources in the parish said that there were some issues after local authorities took away a century-old idol of crucified Christ from the church. Since then, the parish has not been cooperating with the activities of the church and the priest was struggling to manage the financial liabilities of the parish.

The sources said that this might be the reason that Fr. George applied for a transfer from the parish. Fr George’s predecessor had also demanded a transfer within eight months of his taking over charge of the parish, which is an unusual case in Syro-Malabar churches.

However, church authorities said that there were no such issues over the idol. They said the priest had been ‘disturbed’ ever since a fire broke out at the church in March last. In the fire, four people were severely injured and they said that the priest was depressed over the incident.

Earlier, Fr George served as a priest in San Francisco, under Syro Malabar Catholic Diocese of Chicago.

However, the police have registered a case of unnatural death and investigating the case further.

Earlier, in the first week of May, a 21-year-old nun was found dead in a well located near her convent in Thiruvalla of Pathanamthitta district.
