Bhopal: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders and workers gave a rousing welcome to Jyotiraditya Scindia, who arrived here on Thursday after quitting the Congress and joining the saffron brigade in New Delhi on Wednesday.
Scindia, who has claimed that he quit the grand-old party because it ignored the state, has been nominated to Rajya Sabha by the BJP. He is likely to file his nomination papers later in the day. Hoards of BJP workers, saffron flags, shehnayis and dhols were lined up to welcome Scindia as he arrived in a private jet at the Bhopal airport at around 4 pm.
Those who greeted Scindia included state BJP president VD Sharma, leader of opposition Gopal Bhargava, former ministers Rampal Singh, Bhupendra Singh and Narottam Mishra.
After the grand welcome at the airport, he embarked on a roadshow. The 15 km road from the airport to the BJP office was decked with hoardings and posters with Jyotiraditya Scindia's pictures with Shivraj Singh Chouhan.
While Scindia was getting a rousing welcome in Bhopal, his old friend and colleague Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said that the erstwhile royal has forgotten his ideology as he was apprehensive about his political future and that he would not get respect in the BJP.
Talking about Scindia's move to the BJP ending his long association with the Congress, Rahul Gandhi said there is a difference between what Scindia is saying and what is in his heart.
Rahul Gandhi told reporters outside Parliament that Scindia was an old friend of his and had forgotten his ideology as he was apprehensive about his political future. Scindia would not get respect in the BJP, nor would he feel satisfied there, the former Congress chief said.
