A 20-year-old youth was lynched by a group of people in the name of cattle in Bholapur Hadoliya village in Bareilly district of Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday night.
Police said Shahrukh and three of his friends had gone out when a group of people attacked them, accusing them of buffalo thieves. While Shahrukh was brutally thrashed by the group, his friends managed to escape. He was later succumbed to his injuries in a nearby hospital.
The latest incident came on the same day when a panel headed by Union Home Secretary Rajeev Gauba presented a report on the possibility of a new law to target the menace of mob lynching to a Group of Ministers (GoM). The high-level panel was formed to discuss steps to curb fake news and misinformation which often lead to mob violence.
According to reports, the panel has also issued guidelines to social media platforms to check rumours and hate mongering.
Police said that Shahrukh, who was home from Dubai where he worked as a tailor, was beaten to death in Bareilly's Bholapur Hadoliya village. Post-mortem report shows severe beating was the cause of his death.
Shahrukh's brother has filed a complaint against 20-25 unnamed persons and three of his associates. The side which alleged buffalo theft has also lodged a case. Superintendent of Police (City) Abhinandan Singh said four people have been arrested in the case.
More than 40 people were lynched in the country in last one year due to the circulation of fake news in popular social media platforms like WhatsApp.
